What Is Authority in Human Design?
The Three Real Sources and Why Most People Are Taught Seven
Standard Human Design teaching lists seven authorities. Ra Uru Hu’s own advanced teaching says there are three. Here’s where the extra four came from and what your real authority actually is.

If you’ve spent any time in Human Design, you’ve probably memorized a list: Sacral authority, Emotional authority, Splenic authority, Self-Projected authority, Ego authority, Mental Projector authority, Lunar authority. Seven distinct types, each tied to a different center in your chart, each taught as its own separate way of knowing truth. I used to teach it that way too. Then I went back to the source material, not the simplified version most practitioners are trained on, but Ra Uru Hu’s own advanced program, Rave Anatomy and found something that changed everything.
The deeper architecture is the source. The centers are the microphones. He goes further. He calls Solar Plexus a “so-called” awareness center, his own words explaining that its awareness “has not yet emerged” on this plane, because it operates as a motor, not a pure sense. And of the Spleen, he says something striking: it is the only awareness we can actually trust. This is not fringe material. This is Ra, in his own advanced teaching, describing the real architecture underneath the system everyone learns. It just never made it into standard practitioner training in this form.
So Where Did Seven Authorities Come From?
If there are only three binaries, why does everyone learn seven authorities? Because the standard teaching maps authority to whichever center happens to be defined on the surface, rather than to the binary underneath it. Sacral defined? You’re taught “Sacral authority.” Self-Projected (G Center to Throat, no other authority center defined)? You’re taught “Self-Projected authority.” Each center gets its own named authority, as if each one were generating truth independently.
But a center doesn’t generate truth. It broadcasts what the binary beneath it is already saying. Sacral, Ego, Self-Projected none of these are separate sources of authority. They’re different microphones, all ultimately carrying a signal from one of the three real binaries. Seven authorities means seven things to teach, seven things to certify people in, seven reasons to keep a student enrolled in more training. Three binaries is simpler and simpler doesn’t sustain a curriculum the way complexity does. That’s not a conspiracy theory. It’s just what tends to happen when a teaching gets standardized for scale.
The Three Real Binaries
Splenic —> instinctive awareness.
This is the body’s oldest intelligence. It speaks once, in the now, as a flash of certainty, a sensation, a quiet knowing that something is right or wrong. It doesn’t explain itself, and it doesn’t repeat. If you override it and wait for logical confirmation, it has already moved on.

Ajna —> mental awareness.
Not the mind’s constant commentary the periodic flash of recognition that arrives when the mind has genuinely processed something. It doesn’t rush. It arrives on its own timing, often after stepping away from a question rather than pushing toward an answer.

Solar Plexus —> emotional awareness.
Here’s the correction that matters most: the emotional body knows truth immediately, not eventually. What takes time isn’t the knowing, it’s the wave settling enough for that truth to be expressed clearly. Truth is the root. Timing is the light reaching it. The old teaching “no truth in the now” was about expression, not perception and collapsing those two things together has caused a lot of emotionally aware people to distrust a truth they actually already had.

Every person’s design is some combination of these three, broadcast through whichever centers happen to be defined. Two people can share identical center definition and still have completely different authorities because the binary underneath is what actually determines it, not the surface pattern.
Why This Isn’t About Rejecting Ra Uru Hu
I want to be clear about something: this isn’t a case of “Ra was wrong.” It’s the opposite. Everything here comes from his own words, in his own advanced teaching. The three-binary architecture was never disproven or replaced, it was simply never carried down into the practical training most people actually receive. Restoring it means going back to what he already said and following it all the way through, rather than stopping where the standard curriculum stopped.
Finding Your Own Binary
If you’ve spent years being told your authority is “Sacral” or “Self-Projected” or “Ego,” it’s worth asking a different question: which of the three real binaries is actually speaking underneath that center? Is your knowing instant and instinctive? Does it arrive in periodic flashes of recognition? Or is it already there, immediately, and just needs the wave to settle before you can speak it clearly? That question — not the name of a center is where your real authority lives.
